Wine Description for IDIG Königsbach Spätburgunder VDP Grosse Lage 2022 by Christmann

Character
Weingut Christmann, for decades one of the leading addresses in the Palatinate, demonstrates its mastery of Pinot Noir with this Spätburgunder from the VDP Grosse Lage Idig. The wine embodies that Burgundian elegance that has made Christmann a model for an entire generation of German winemakers. With 13% alcohol and a dry orientation, this 2022 presents itself as a refined, terroir-focused Spätburgunder that prioritises precision over power.
Terroir & Origin
The Idig vineyard site near Königsbach ranks among the Grand Crus of the Palatinate. The vineyard lies in the Haardt foothills and benefits from limestone soils that lend the Spätburgunder that mineral tension and structure which distinguishes it from richer interpretations. The mild climate of the Palatinate with its warm days and cool nights enables a long ripening period with optimal acidity structure – ideal conditions for a Pinot Noir of international calibre.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Christmann works according to biodynamic principles and counts among the pioneers of natural winemaking in Germany. The Spätburgunder grapes are hand-selected and vinified with the greatest care. Typical of the house is the restrained use of oak, which places fruit and terroir in the foreground. The 2022 vintage, characterised by dryness and warmth, produced concentrated yet not overripe grapes – a vintage that combines freshness with depth.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Spätburgunder demands a cuisine that respects its finesse: game birds, duck breast roasted rare, veal fillet with mushrooms or a mature Comté would be classic companions. It also displays its versatility with tuna tataki or mushroom risotto. The structure of the wine harmonises beautifully with earthy aromas and fine roasted notes.
