Wine Description for Cuvée Alexandria VdF blanc 2024 by Matassa
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous copper gold with natural cloudiness – an unfiltered, living wine that reveals its authenticity right in the glass.
- Nose
- A captivating bouquet of elderflower and acacia blossoms, interwoven with classic nutmeg notes and rose fragrance. Behind this unfolds ripe cider apples, a hint of hops and herbal tea, rounded off by a seductive creaminess reminiscent of peach compote with cream. Complex, aromatic, fascinating.
- Palate
- Juicy and precise at once. The fruit shifts elegantly between ripe stone fruit, kernel fruit and oranges. The 35-day skin contact imparts a subtle yet perceptible tannin structure and extract that harmoniously integrates into the wine’s framework. Despite its complexity, the wine feels weightlessly light, with fine tannin structure and vibrant acidity that lend it clarity and elegance. With just 10.5% alcohol, this wine proves that finesse need not depend on power.
- Finish
- Persistent and delicate, with lingering floral notes and fine mineral freshness.
- Terroir & Origin
- From Roussillon, a region known for powerful wines – yet Matassa reveals here the elegant, delicate side of this southern French appellation. The old vines of Muscat d’Alexandrie yield extremely low yields of no more than 18 hectolitres per hectare.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Muscat d’Alexandrie from old vines, farmed organically and biodynamically. Following hand-harvesting, an unusually long skin fermentation of 35 days took place, followed by eleven months of maturation in neutral 500-litre oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered and unsulphited – a natural wine in the truest sense.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Goat’s cheese with honey, scallops with saffron, Moroccan apricot tagine, pan-fried monkfish with fennel, or as an aperitif with antipasti.
- Special Characteristics
- A radically distinctive wine from Tom Lubbe, who achieves maximum expressiveness through minimalist intervention. The combination of low alcohol, natural vinification and old vine material makes this wine a statement for authentic, terroir-driven winemaking.
