Wine Description for Clos Vougeot Grand Cru AOP 2023 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Character
The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru by Jérôme Galeyrand embodies everything that Burgundy means in its purest form: a deep rootedness in the soil, artisanal care and the quiet conviction that great wine is not made, but accompanied. Galeyrand, a winemaker with a pronounced feel for biodynamic principles and minimal intervention in the cellar, lets the terroir speak – without fanfare, but with unmistakable authority.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Vougeot is one of the most emblematic vineyard sites of the Côte de Nuits – a walled enclosure created by Cistercian monks in the Middle Ages, spanning around 50 hectares, which has served for centuries as the benchmark of Burgundian wine culture. The limestone and clay-rich soils lend the wine structure and depth, whilst the gently east-facing exposure favours even ripening. The 2023 vintage brought warm, dry conditions to Burgundy, enabling ripe, concentrated fruit whilst maintaining freshness – provided the harvest was conducted with care and at precisely the right moment.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir – the only red grape variety that matters in the heart of Burgundy. In Galeyrand’s hands, this means: gentle hand-harvesting, work with natural yeasts and an élevage that places the integrity of the fruit above any technical intervention. His style is characterised by elegance and transparency, not extraction or opulence. The wine should reflect the parcel, not the cellar – an approach that is certainly advocated in Burgundy, but rarely implemented with such consistency.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this provenance and depth deserves a worthy table. Roasted squab with truffle jus, venison fillet with wild mushrooms or a classic Bœuf Bourguignon make ideal partners. For those preferring something simpler: a ripe Époisses or Comté needs no more elaborate setting.
