Wine description for Clos Gelida 4 Heretats Brut Nature Gran Reserva 2019 by Vins El Cep
- Colour & Appearance
- Bright lemon to straw yellow with greenish reflections. The mousse rises rapidly, evenly and persistently – a bead of fine, recurring elegance.
- Nose
- The extended lees ageing defines the first impression: brioche, salty freshly baked dough, butterscotch biscuits. Beneath lie chalk, limestone subsoil and oyster shell. Nutty tones of almonds, hazelnuts and macadamia meet restrained fruit – white peach, yellow apple, a hint of khaki. Dried marjoram, sage, thyme, white pepper and fennel add further complexity. Remarkable depth and density.
- Palate
- As an uncompromising Brut Nature, it is completely dry, clear and linear. Mineral, stony, chalky at its core, yet balanced and harmonious. The fruit remains subtle, whilst herbal and saline notes provide finely dosed accents. Its true strength lies in the texture: volume, tactile presence and mineral tension carry the wine – aromatically restrained, yet powerful and profound on the palate.
- Finish
- Long, intense and persistent, with a saline-mineral aftertaste and a presence that lingers well beyond the moment.
- Terroir & Origin
- A liquid manifesto of cooperation: grapes from all four family estates – Can Castany, Can Simon, Can Prats and Can Miquel – flow into this cuvée. Planted between 1955 and 1990, the vines are rooted in the calcareous soils of the Alt Penedès, with a south-easterly exposure at altitudes of 200 to 400 metres. Cool nights preserve acidity. The 2019 vintage is considered a benchmark year with balanced ripeness.
- Grape Varieties & Vinification
- Xarel-lo (50%) forms the backbone, complemented by Macabeo (20%) and 15% each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Traditional bottle fermentation, with a minimum of 60 months on the lees – far exceeding the requirements for a Gran Reserva.
- Food Pairings
- A sparkling wine with a clear culinary focus, going far beyond the aperitif: oysters, ceviche, gambas al ajillo, Ibérico ham, mushroom risotto or aged Manchego. Also an excellent choice with poultry in a herb jus.
- Special Features
- Vins El Cep is among Spain’s pioneers: the country’s first biodynamic Cava producer (2003), now Demeter-certified across 60 hectares and one of only twelve “Elaboradores Integrales” – 100% estate-grown grapes, vinified entirely on site. Four estates, four grape varieties, one wine of rare textural depth.
