Wine Description for Bianco di Mortilli DOC Monreale 2022 by Case Alte
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale lemon yellow with sparkling, golden reflections in the glass – a promising first impression.
- Nose
- This Catarratto from Monreale presents itself remarkably multi-layered. The initial impression is herbaceous-green and crisply fresh: chervil, mint, parsley and lemongrass create an ethereal base freshness. Over this lie ripe yellow apples and pears, kaffir lime and lime zest. Surprisingly, exotic notes of grilled pineapple and passion fruit emerge, yet the cool herbal freshness and subtle roasted aromas dominate. A hint of cold smoke lends additional depth to the bouquet.
- Palate
- Straightforward and stony-mineral on the palate. Citrus fruits in every conceivable facet – lemon, lime, grapefruit – both as zest, juice and pith, partly candied as well. This combination of bitter and acidic elements proves enormously invigorating. A fine mineral film on the teeth reinforces the saline, clear character of this white wine.
- Finish
- Saline, clear and straightforward with dominant citrus fruit and a subtle herbal hint. Refreshing and lingering.
- Terroir & Origin
- The DOC Monreale in western Sicily, located near Palermo, produces mineral-driven white wines. The stony soils and Mediterranean climate lend this Catarratto its characteristic freshness and tension.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Catarratto, the quintessential indigenous Sicilian grape variety. The subtle roasted aromas suggest an ageing process that lends the wine additional complexity without masking its vibrant freshness.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- An ideal companion to grilled fish, calamari fritti, spaghetti alle vongole or Sicilian arancini. The saline minerality pairs perfectly with oysters or carpaccio di pesce spada. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese and herb salads.
- Special Features
- A prime example of the renaissance of indigenous Sicilian grape varieties. At just 12.5% alcohol, this Bianco remains refreshingly light-footed – an uncomplicated, yet by no means simple summer wine with surprising aromatic depth.
