Wine Description for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Teatro Riserva 2019 1500ml Magnum by Salicutti
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, transparent ruby red with youthful luminosity – a wine that, despite its density, allows light to pass through and thus announces the elegance of its character already in the glass.
- Nose
- Still restrained in its clarity, yet of striking depth: The Teatro 2019 is currently more sketch than finished painting. Dark fruit lies tightly bound beneath layers of shoe polish, fine smoke and a delicate, seductive reduction. The terroir whispers – one must listen carefully. Patience and large glasses are not an option, but a necessity.
- Palate
- Where the nose still remains silent, the palate speaks with emphasis. Powerful, taut and of immense inner density – yet this power is not crude muscularity, but the nimble, precise elegance of a high-performance athlete. The tannins reveal themselves as delicate, firm and silky, the acidity ripe and glowing from within, driving, invigorating. A wine that keeps the glass emptying again and again.
- Finish
- Long, orchestral and cathedral-like in its structure. The finale resonates like the final chord of a great symphony – complex, dignified and with the clear promise: Here the last word has not yet been spoken.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Teatro vineyard site encompasses just 0.7 hectares at around 500 metres altitude – the highest and coolest of the three Salicutti sites. South-facing like a natural amphitheatre, with sandy, clay-rich soils over gravel, limestone and calcareous marl. The cool microclimate gives the wines their characteristic darkness and profundity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Sangiovese from vines planted in 1994 – soils that have never experienced conventional pesticides. Podere Salicutti is Montalcino’s first organically certified winery. Today run by Sabine and Felix Eichbauer, who continue the biodynamic aspirations of founder Francesco Leanza with critical awareness. The ageing is careful, human intervention minimal – the terroir is allowed to speak.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine of this stature demands equally worthy partners: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised wild boar haunch or a mature Pecorino di Pienza. Alternatively: Simply open the magnum, invite a good friend and wait.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500 ml) is the ideal format for a wine of this ageing potential – slower oxidation, slower development, greater future. Drinking window: earliest 2028–2030, peak possibly beyond 2035. Those who open it now will encounter a fascinating, but still sleeping giant.
