Wine Description for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 375ml from Col d’Orcia
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with elegant violet reflections that underscore the youthfulness of this vintage.
- Nose
- A classic, multi-layered Sangiovese bouquet of impressive depth. Intense notes of black cherries, barberries and raspberries meld with plums and blood oranges. These are joined by mint, cedar, cherry stones and dried violets. Subtle hints of cinnamon, vanilla and crushed stone lend complexity, whilst notes of undergrowth and foliage authentically reflect the Tuscan provenance.
- Palate
- Dense, juicy and seductively ripe, this Brunello presents itself on the palate. The balance between nobility and earthiness is achieved effortlessly: sweet red and dark berry fruits, ripe cherries, baking spices and quatre épices meet mineral notes of ground stone. The acidity and tannin structure characteristic of Sangiovese is perfectly integrated and lends the wine character and backbone without compromising its silkiness.
- Finish
- Long and lingering with elegant hints of liquorice and candied orange zest. The tannins remain present, yet silky.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Sangiovese grapes come from the south-facing vineyards of Col d’Orcia at approximately 300 metres altitude overlooking the Orcia river. The 2020 vintage benefited from a balanced growing cycle with ideal temperature variations between day and night in September, which enabled perfect phenolic ripeness and high aromatic concentration.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sangiovese, hand-picked with strict selection. Fermentation for 15 days at controlled temperature below 28°C. Ageing for four years, of which 32 months in Slavonian and Allier oak barrels of various sizes, followed by at least 12 months bottle age. A classic, traditional vinification without modern intervention.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Excellent with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Ossobuco, wild boar ragù, pappardelle with porcini mushrooms, aged Pecorino Toscano or braised beef roast with rosemary.
- Special Features
- A benchmark Brunello in classical style from the traditional estate of the Cinzano family. The half-litre bottle is ideal for special occasions for two. The 2020 already shows great accessibility, yet possesses the potential for further years of bottle age.
