Colour & Appearance

Ruby red with violet reflections – youthfully radiant in the glass.

Nose

A classic Sangiovese profile in its purest form: black cherries, barberries, raspberries and blood oranges, accompanied by mint, cedar, dried violet flowers and a touch of cinnamon and vanilla. Beneath, crushed stone, undergrowth and leaf litter – depth and complexity that are already inviting yet promise much more to come.

Palate

Dense, juicy and ripe, yet remarkably supple for such a young Brunello. Sweet red and dark berry fruits, cherries, baking spices and a hint of quatre épices, carried by the acidity and tannin structure typical of Sangiovese. The balance between nobility and earthiness is achieved effortlessly.

Finish

Long and coating, with echoes of liquorice and candied orange zest – a lingering finale that promises patience will be rewarded.

Terroir & Origin

The grapes come from the south-facing vineyards of Col d’Orcia in Montalcino, at around 300 metres above sea level, on a hillside overlooking the Orcia River in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Val d’Orcia. With 108 hectares of Brunello, the estate ranks among the three largest producers in the region and has been operating as Tuscany’s largest certified organic winery since 2010 – sheep and goats graze between the vine rows, and home-made compost nourishes the soils.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Pure Sangiovese, hand-harvested and rigorously selected – both in the vineyard and again at the sorting table. 15 days of maceration in wide stainless-steel tanks for gentle extraction, followed by four years of ageing: 32 months in large Slavonian and Allier botti, and at least twelve months of bottle rest. A traditional maturation, deliberately unfashionable.

Food Pairings

A wine for the table: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, rack of lamb or aged Pecorino Toscano. Also a reliable choice with mushroom dishes and hearty stews.

Special Features

Col d’Orcia played a key role in establishing Rosso di Montalcino as a separate DOC – here, a sense of origin takes precedence above all else. The 2020 vintage benefited from cool September nights, which brought about perfectly balanced phenolic ripeness and intense aromatics. The practical 375 ml bottle makes this classic Brunello accessible even for an intimate evening for two – greatness in half format.
