Wine information

For this wine, Boris Champy used Pinot Noir from a west-facing parcel in Aux Coucherias, which lies just outside Bouze-lès-Beaune. The 1er Cru vineyard was planted in the 1950s, the site is very steep and characterised by dark loam and limestone. Champy knows the vineyard from his time at Louis Jadot; for the House of Jadot produced the Clos de Couchereaux. With Champy, it's the Clos Montchovet. The Clos is isolated by trees and gorse. The plot has been farmed biodynamically since 1985. The vine density is around 10,000 in Guyot training. Boris Champy fermented the grapes to 55 % as whole clusters and aged them in barriques for over twelve months. However, due to the vintage having botryrtis, he de-stemmed the grapes completely, treated the styles with sulphur and formed a millefeuille from layers of de-stemmed grapes and rape to ferment the grapes.

Nose

Boris Champys Beaune 1er Cru Aux Coucherias 2021 smells of rape, earth and a fruit of raspberries and wild strawberries, some cherry and plum. This is underpinned with some gravel and lactic notes. On top is a hint of violets and foliage.

Palate

Champy understands how to Aux Coucherias to clearly bring out the Beaune typicity. Juice, fruit, earthiness and above all freshness are found here. The Pinot Noir appears cool with quite supple tannin and offers a certain complexity. It offers plenty of acidic fruit of cherries, barberries and sumac. There are also green but ripe notes of stems. This vintage appears lean as well as energetic and currently still somewhat austere.
