Wine Description for Beaune 1er Cru Aux Coucherias AOP 2023 by Boris Champy

Character
Boris Champy, an emerging voice in Burgundy, reinterprets the classical elegance of Beaune with this Premier Cru. The vineyard site Aux Coucherias lies on the southern edge of the appellation and produces wines that oscillate between the power of the Côte de Beaune and Burgundian finesse. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. points to a style that prioritises freshness and drinkability over opulence – a deliberate choice in times of climate change.
Terroir & Origin
Beaune forms the commercial and vinophile heart of the Côte d’Or. The Premier Cru vineyard site Aux Coucherias benefits from calcareous clay soils and a favourable south-easterly exposure that combines warmth with good drainage. The 2023 vintage presented winemakers with challenges: a damp spring and an unsettled summer demanded precise vineyard craftsmanship. Champy, known for his biodynamic approach and minimal intervention, will have consistently implemented his philosophy of authenticity here.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir reveals its full complexity in Burgundy – nowhere else does the grape variety show so transparently the nuances of its origin. Champy’s approach follows the tradition of natural winemaking: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, restrained use of new oak, no fining or filtration. The result is wines that tell more of the place than the cellar. With such a young vintage, patience is advisable – Premier Crus from Beaune typically develop over five to ten years.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Burgundian cuisine offers the natural pairing: Coq au Vin, Boeuf Bourguignon or Époisses with fresh baguette. The presumably moderate tannin structure also harmonises with roasted poultry, duck breast or mushroom dishes. For a modern interpretation: grilled salmon or tuna with red wine sauce. The serving temperature should be a cool 14-16°C to preserve the freshness.
