Wine Description for Baumgarten Pinot Blanc Federspiel-Kabinett 1987 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
A brilliant straw yellow, which after 37 years has retained remarkable freshness and brilliance – not a trace of oxidation or age fatigue.
Nose
Here unfolds an opulent aromatic spectrum, which demonstrates the extraordinary ageing potential of biodynamically farmed wines. White flowers, lemons and ripe pears form the foundation, whilst above them sits a fascinating pastry bouquet of vanilla crescents, apple tart and hazelnut. Particularly noteworthy: the herbaceous notes of rosemary and thyme, which lend this Pinot Blanc an unexpected, almost provocative complexity.
Palate
The vibrant acidity is the backbone of this wine – taut, precise and completely intact. A subtle malolactic fermentation imparts delicate yoghurt notes, which harmonise perfectly with the acid structure and give the wine a creamy texture without compromising freshness. The wine seems to float across the palate, light-footed yet with impressive weight.
Finish
Persistent and lingering, with a remarkable length that allows the entire aromatic richness to pass in review once more. The acidity carries through to the end, the wine finishing juicy and lustrous.
Terroir & Origin
From the vineyard site Schlossberg in Baumgarten, cadastral municipality of Mautern in the Wachau. The biodynamic farming of Nikolaihof – practised for generations – shows its full power here: wines of incredible longevity and vitality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Blanc, vinified as a Federspiel-Kabinett with moderate 11.5% alcohol. An archive release 2024, which proves that great Pinot Blancs can age for decades.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Roasted quail breasts, calf’s sweetbreads in nut butter, aged Comté or goat’s cheese with herbs. The herbaceous notes harmonise beautifully with pasta with white truffles.
Special Features
A testament to the ageing potential of Austrian white wines and the biodynamic philosophy of Nikolaihof. Collector’s item and rare – no wonder the taster secured two cases straight away.
