Terroir & Origin

The Nikolaihof in Mautern is one of the oldest wine estates in Austria and has been a beacon of biodynamic agriculture in the Wachau for decades. The Danube decisively shapes the microclimate of this narrow river landscape: cool nights, warm days and the characteristic weathered primary rock soils of gneiss and mica schist lend the wines a mineral tension that is hard to find so pronounced anywhere else in Austria. The Federspiel level corresponds to wines from less exposed vineyard sites or younger vines – and yet this wine, too, unmistakably bears the signature of the Wachau terroir.

Grape Variety & Vinification

The Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s great indigenous grape variety – and in the Wachau, it finds one of its most compelling expressions.
