Wine Description for Vinothek Riesling Dry 2000 1500ml Magnum by Nikolaihof
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, luminous gold with amber-tinted reflections – the colour of a wine that regards time as an ally rather than an enemy. Clear and brilliant in the glass, with a density that speaks to extraordinary substance.
- Nose
- The nose opens slowly and with great dignity: beeswax and liquorice form the aromatic foundation, framed by earthy stone notes that unmistakably tell of the primary rock soils of the Wachau. To these are added ripe hints of quince and mirabelle plum, embedded in a fine, almost meditative spice. No loud perfume – rather a quiet, deep conversation.
- Palate
- What unfolds on the palate is remarkable: a Riesling of extraordinary vitality and tension, which despite more than two decades shows no signs of fatigue. The entry is creamy and firm at once, the texture dense and precise. Phenolic seriousness and a fine, pervasive acidity lend the wine a structural integrity that is second to none. Stony, spicy and earthy notes dominate over fruit – and that is a virtue, not a weakness. Juiciness and clarity remain ever present.
- Finish
- Long, precise and remarkably persistent. The wine extends beyond the palate into a finale characterised by mineral depth and spice. A finish that invites contemplation – and another sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- Hailing from the primary rock vineyard sites around Mauthern in the Wachau, this Riesling embodies the essence of one of Europe’s great wine landscapes. The Danube, the steep terraces, the gneiss and mica schist – all of this speaks unmistakably from the glass.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling, vinified according to the biodynamic principles of Nikolaihof – one of Austria’s oldest and most significant wine estates. Bottled only in 2016, after extended cellar ageing, and released to market as a Late Release only in 2024. The large-format magnum bottle has slowed its development and preserved the wine in a state that carries it far into the future.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine of this complexity demands partners of equal standing: pike-perch on lentils with brown butter, aged Comté or Munster, sweetbreads with morels, or simply a piece of fine smoked salmon with a touch of sour cream. Also as a contemplative solo – without food – a perfect experience.
- Special Features
- A Late Release of a special kind: aged for years in the cellar of Nikolaihof, bottled only in 2016 and released in 2024 – this wine is an impressive statement against the hectic pace of the modern wine market. The magnum bottle guarantees ideal ageing conditions. Whoever opens it today encounters a wine that has not yet reached the end of its development. Drink it now – or better still – wait another ten years.
