Character

A Riesling of crystalline clarity and filigree structure: citrus fruit, yellow peach and herbal notes are carried by a cool, linear acidity, accompanied by that salty minerality which has always distinguished the Steiner Hund. With 12.5% alcohol, it remains slender and light-footed – a wine of elegance, not power. The Doppel-Magnum (3 litres) grants it additional time: in this large format, it matures more slowly, retaining greater freshness and patience.

Terroir & Origin

The vineyard site Steiner Hund is among the famous stone terraces of the Wachau. The estate itself is a place steeped in history: Nikolaihof in Mautern stands on Roman foundations dating back to 63 BC and is considered Austria’s oldest winery. The Saahs family has been cultivating it since 1894.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Riesling, the Wachau’s noblest white variety, finds a particularly pure expression here. Nikolaihof has been Demeter-certified since 1971 and is regarded as the world’s oldest Demeter winery. The musts ferment spontaneously and mature in large, old wooden casks, a craft that endows the wine with inner structure and remarkable longevity. The 2017 vintage in this large format, in particular, promises many more years of fascinating development.

A versatile wine for the table: perfect with Wiener Schnitzel, boiled Tafelspitz, delicate sole in butter or asparagus. Asian cuisine such as Vietnamese summer rolls or mildly spiced curry dishes also finds an ideal partner in its fresh acidity.
