Wine description for Steiner Hund Riesling dry 2017 3000ml Double Magnum from Nikolaihof

Character
The Steiner Hund Riesling from the legendary single vineyard site represents biodynamic viticulture at the highest level. The Nikolaihof estate, managed according to Demeter standards since 1971 and thus Austria’s oldest organic producer, creates a Riesling of remarkable precision and depth. The double magnum bottle underscores the considerable ageing potential of this wine, which benefited from a warm yet balanced vintage in 2017.
Terroir & Origin
The Steiner Hund vineyard site ranks among the historic crus of the Wachau and sits on weathered primary rock soils with gneiss and amphibolite. These mineral formations impart the Riesling with its characteristic tension and salinity. The Pannonian climate of the Wachau with cool nights and warm days enables a long ripening period whilst preserving the acidity structure. The Danube acts as a crucial thermal regulator for the microclimate.
Grape variety & Vinification
Riesling finds ideal conditions in the Wachau and develops its most complex expression here. Nikolaihof practises minimalist cellar work with spontaneous fermentation by wild yeasts and ageing in traditional wooden casks. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. testifies to the estate’s philosophy of placing elegance before power. The biodynamic approach in the vineyard fosters vibrant, terroir-authentic wines with remarkable ageing ability.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This dry Riesling harmonises beautifully with pan-fried char, boiled beef with apple horseradish or mature alpine cheese. The mineral structure makes it an ideal companion for crustaceans and oysters. It also displays its versatility with Asian dishes featuring ginger and lemongrass or roasted veal. The size of the bottle predestines it for special occasions and festive tables.
