Tasting Package Vino Gross – Four Unsulphured Wines from Haloze

Character
This tasting package brings together four wines from Vino Gross, one 0.75 l bottle each (3 l in total), offering a cross-section of Michael Gross’s signature style: crystal-clear, limestone-driven wines with no added sulphur, grown in some of the steepest vineyards in Slovenia. Three whites and one light red, ranging from an accessible house wine to a single-varietal Furmint. Anyone wishing to understand why critics rank these wines among the most precise zero-zero cuvées in Europe will find the proof here in four glasses.
Terroir & Origin
The Haloze hills in Štajerska Slovenija, just a few kilometres beyond the Styrian border, form a rugged landscape with slopes reaching gradients of up to 65 per cent – where all work is done exclusively by hand. The soil is known as Opok, a calcareous marl that lends the wines tension and a saline drive. In the cellar at Gorca: spontaneous fermentation, maturation in large, used wooden casks, and no sulphur.
The Four Wines
Maribor Blanc Mise Tardive 2020 – Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, bottled late and accordingly matured; cool herbal spice, citrus, and a creamy core.
Hišno Vino Noir 2025 – the red house wine made from Blaufränkisch and Welschriesling; pale, juicy, and best served slightly chilled.
Iglič Haloze 2023 – single-varietal Furmint, the grape variety of Michael’s grandmother; chalky, taut, with notes of green apple and salt.
Haloze Blanc 2023 – Sauvignon Blanc, Furmint, and Welschriesling from the terraced vineyards; the introduction to the Opok style, floral and immensely drinkable.
Food Pairings
A complete menu package: the whites with trout, fresh goat’s cheese, asparagus, and fried chicken; the Hišno Vino Noir with a cold platter, grilled vegetables, and mushroom dishes. The Iglič deserves pride of place with the main course of fish or white meat.
