Wine Description for Gewürztraminer 350 N.N. 2023 from Odinstal

Colour & Appearance
Luminously bright straw yellow with delicate green reflections – unusually clear and brilliant for a Gewürztraminer.
Nose
Here we encounter a radically different approach: where one expects opulent rose petals and lychee, one is initially greeted by herbal freshness and a fascinating reduction that keeps the wine mysterious. Only upon closer inspection do delicate rose petals and rosewater reveal themselves in the background – subtle, never intrusive. Pale orchard fruit, nashi pear and native herbs at various stages of ripeness dominate the aromatic profile. A refreshingly restrained interpretation of the variety.
Palate
Here the Odinstal manifesto becomes tangible: at a moderate 12% alcohol and with crisp acidity, this Gewürztraminer moves light years away from Alsatian opulence or South Tyrolean richness. Instead: crystalline precision, invigorating freshness, positively mouth-watering. The fruit remains discreet – freshly cut nashi pear – whilst the herbal component provides tension and drinkability. At the finish, finally: a hint of varietal charm, but drawn so subtly that one wonders whether it’s imagined.
Terroir & Origin
The vines have been rooted since 2004 in weathered basalt soils at 350 metres elevation in the Pfalz – a site that writes coolness and mineral precision into this wine’s DNA.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested in mid-September, remarkable 80% whole-bunch pressing, the remaining 20% maceration fermentation. Maturation in stainless steel tanks with complete malolactic fermentation. Minimal sulphur use at 28mg/l. A vinification that places freshness and origin above varietal expectations.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Scallop ceviche, steamed monkfish with herb oil, goat’s cheese with honey, Vietnamese summer rolls or grilled asparagus with lemon butter.
Special Features
A Gewürztraminer for purists and sceptics of the variety alike – radically reduced, terroir-focused, refreshingly different.
