Wine Description for Moscatel do Douro DOC, 20 years old by Niepoort

Character

Niepoort’s 20-year-old Moscatel do Douro represents a fascinating niche in Portugal’s wine landscape. Whilst Port wines dominate the region, this matured Moscatel demonstrates the exceptional versatility of the Douro Valley. The long barrel ageing of 20 years bestows this wine with remarkable complexity, in which the natural fruitiness of the Moscatel grape encounters profound oxidative development.

Terroir and Tradition

The Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions, offers ideal conditions for concentrated, expressive wines with its steep slate hillsides and harsh continental climate. The Moscatel vine (Muscat) finds a unique expression here, which differs markedly from the Muscat wines of other regions. The barren slate soil forces the vines to root deeply and imparts a distinctive mineral note to the wine, which harmonises beautifully with the sweetness.

Winemaking Philosophy

Dirk Niepoort, one of Portugal’s most innovative winemakers, has established the family estate to international acclaim. Known for his uncompromising quality orientation, he combines traditional craftsmanship with modern winemaking understanding. This matured Moscatel reflects Niepoort’s philosophy: respect for tradition whilst remaining open to new approaches. With 20% alcohol content, the wine follows the region’s classical fortification tradition, whilst the high residual sweetness is perfectly balanced.

Food Pairing Recommendations

This noble dessert wine unfolds its full potential with substantial nut-based desserts or Portuguese specialities such as Pastel de Nata. As a meditative digestif after a meal or paired with aged hard cheeses such as Manchego or Comté, it offers an extraordinary taste experience. The balance between sweetness, acidity and alcohol makes it a versatile companion, one that can harmonise even with spiced dishes from North African cuisine.
