Wine description for Mussbacher Eselshaut Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2022 1500ml Magnum by Christmann

Character
Weingut Christmann is counted among the top producers of the Palatinate and has built an excellent reputation over recent decades, particularly with Spätburgunder. The Eselshaut in Mussbach is a classified VDP Erste Lage with the potential to produce Pinot Noir of remarkable finesse and depth. The 2022 vintage was characterised by good quality despite climatic challenges in the Palatinate. The magnum bottle additionally promises slower, more harmonious maturation of the wine.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Mussbacher Eselshaut lies on the eastern edge of the Haardt Mountains and benefits from calcareous soils with loess overlay. This combination imparts a characteristic mineral tension and elegant structure to the wines. The temperate climate of the Mittelhaardt with its warm days and cool nights creates ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, which here combines its Burgundian finesse with Palatinate fruit abundance. Christmann manages his vineyard sites biodynamically according to Demeter principles, which further emphasises the terroir expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) is the most demanding red grape variety and requires the highest precision from the winemaker. Christmann pursues a purist approach, relying on spontaneous fermentation, careful extraction and maturation in traditional wooden casks. The moderate alcohol content of 13% points to a style that places elegance before power – very much in keeping with modern German Pinot Noir philosophy. The dry vinification allows terroir and fruit to take centre stage.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A Spätburgunder of this provenance harmonises beautifully with rosy roasted veal fillet, Coq au Vin or braised Boeuf Bourguignon. Equally recommended are mushroom dishes, duck breast with cherry sauce or aged Comté. The mineral structure makes it an ideal companion for game birds or lamb rack with herb crust.
