  • The Matassa Blanc VdF 2023 from winemaker Tom Lubbe is an unconventional natural wine from Roussillon, vinified from Grenache and Macabeu. With only 10% alcohol, this Orange Wine presents itself as a light-footed, purist wine with pronounced character and floral notes.
  • 🎨 Colour: Luminous orange with bright reflections and natural cloudiness

  • 👅 Taste: Textured and dense in structure, lean and straightforward, dancing light-footedly due to low alcohol content, phenolic character with tart apple and bitter notes, smooth and silky with angular structure, nutty finish with pointed acidity
  • 🎭 Character: Wild, purist and honest – an uncompromising natural wine with edges and corners that places authenticity before palatability
  • 🍽️ Food pairing: Grilled fennel with lemon, sautéed mushrooms with herbs, light tapas or antipasti

Wine Description for Matassa Blanc VdF 2023 from Matassa

Colour & Appearance
Luminous orange with bright reflections and distinct, unfiltered cloudiness – a visual statement of uncompromising purism.
Nose
Initially closed and marked by a slight reduction that demands patience. With air contact, a fascinating aromatic world unfolds: almond blossom and apple blossom dominate the floral side, accompanied by preserved cherries, white currant and raspberry. Ripe pear and caramelised quince lend depth, whilst tart lemon creates tension. Provençal herbs – lavender, oregano, thyme – meet a spicy bouquet of white pepper, cardamom and allspice.
Palate
Textural and dense on the attack, yet surprisingly lean and linear. The 10% alcohol provides remarkable lightness of foot, though also a certain gap in the middle. The wine literally dances across the tongue, phenolic bitter notes of tart apple shape the texture. These slightly unripe, green bitter elements somewhat slow the drinking flow, but also lend character and edges. The intense aromatics in the background remain forceful and exciting.
Finish
Nutty and carried by pointed acidity – a finale that places precision before flattery.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A blend of Grenache and Macabeu, uncompromisingly crafted without added sulphur. Tom Lubbe of Matassa embodies radical minimalism with this wine – wild, honest, unfiltered. The orange style through skin contact gives the Blanc its characteristic colour and phenolic structure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This polarising wine demands equally characterful dishes: grilled fennel with olive oil, hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego, Moroccan tagine with apricots, roasted monkfish or sweetbreads with herbs.
Special Features
A wine for adventurers, not conformists. Matassa stands for uncompromising natural wine from Roussillon – wild, untamed and polarising. Those seeking perfection are in the wrong place; those who value authenticity will be rewarded.
