Wine Description for Lutzmannsburg Ried Kirchberg 2021 by Moric

Character
Roland Velich and his winery Moric are regarded as pioneers of modern Burgenland wine culture – and this Lutzmannsburg Ried Kirchberg 2021 is an impressive testament to that legacy. Velich’s philosophy is clear: the wine should speak, not the winemaker. The result is a Blaufränkisch of precise terroir authenticity, which prioritises elegance over power and carries the character of its origins with dignity.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Kirchberg lies within the municipality of Lutzmannsburg, one of the more northerly locations in Mittelburgenland, far removed from the warming proximity of Lake Neusiedl. The soils here are characterised by iron-rich slate and clay minerals, which impart a distinctive mineral tension and cool depth to the wine. The continental climate with warm summers and cool nights promotes slow, steady ripening – ideal for a Blaufränkisch that aspires to finesse. The vintage 2021 brought cooler, wetter conditions to Burgenland, which favoured freshness and structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Blaufränkisch is Austria’s great red character grape – vibrant, marked by acidity, with a natural inclination towards dark berries, peppery spices and earthy minerality. Moric vinifies consistently in the spirit of terroir: spontaneous fermentation, gentle maturation and a deliberate avoidance of excessive extraction or oak influence. The aim is transparency – a wine that reflects its origins without being overworked. With 13.5% alcohol and dry residual sugar, it displays a balanced, accessible profile without heaviness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The vibrant acidity and spicy depth of Kirchberg make it a versatile table companion. Classically, it harmonises beautifully with Wiener Tafelspitz, braised beef or game dishes such as venison ragout. Equally recommended: aged alpine cheese, herb-roasted lamb leg or a hearty mushroom risotto. A wine that truly comes alive at the table – and rewards patience.
