Wine description for Königsbacher Ölberg Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2022 1500ml Magnum by Christmann

Character
Weingut Christmann belongs to the absolute elite of the Palatinate and has established itself over the past decades as a Pinot Noir specialist. This Spätburgunder from the VDP Erste Lage Königsbacher Ölberg embodies the Burgundian philosophy of the Christmann family: precision, finesse and restraint rather than opulence. The magnum bottle also promises slower, more harmonious development – a format for connoisseurs and special occasions.
Terroir & Origin
The Königsbacher Ölberg ranks among the historically most significant vineyard sites of the Mittelhaardt and lies on limestone soils with loess overlay. This geological constellation imparts a characteristic mineral tension and elegance to the wines. The temperate climate of the Palatinate with its warm days and cool nights creates ideal conditions for aromatic ripeness whilst maintaining freshness. Steffen Christmann, who manages the estate biodynamically, masterfully understands how to bring out the site’s character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder is Germany’s most demanding red grape variety, and Christmann is among those winemakers who unlock its full potential. Biodynamic viticulture and consistent avoidance of oenological intervention result in wines of great authenticity. The 2022 vintage produced concentrated yet not over-extracted wines despite climatic challenges. With 13% alcohol and a dry style, the Christmann signature is evident here: elegance over power, structure over fruit bomb.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Spätburgunder demands cuisine that respects its finesse. Roasted duck with porcini mushrooms, pink roasted veal fillet or game birds are classic companions. It also unfolds its full class alongside aged Comté or Époisses. The wine’s Burgundian character harmonises beautifully with mushroom dishes and truffle.
