Wine Description for Klausberg Riesling Privatreserve Trocken 2005 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Deep golden saffron yellow – a hue that impressively documents nearly two decades of maturation and promises concentration.
Nose
A charged, positively electrifying bouquet that captivates immediately. Initially dominated by opulent exoticism: carambola, lychee, dried mango and butter-browned pineapple unfold with impressive intensity. With air contact, a fascinating spicy dimension develops – star anise, saffron, curry and lemongrass lend the wine an almost meditative complexity. This aromatic diversity is typical of world-class aged Wachau Riesling.
Palate
With dense texture and remarkable structure, this 2005 presents itself in dignified maturity. A fine tannin – unusual for Riesling, yet characteristic of Nikolaihof’s biodynamic vinification – gives the wine backbone and stature. Saline minerality runs through the entire palate, whilst ripe, apple-like acidity provides freshness and tension. Refinement triumphs over mere power – here lies the true greatness of the vintage.
Finish
Long, delicious and of remarkable persistence. The mineral notes linger, accompanied by a saline freshness that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Klause is a privileged vineyard site in the upper part of the Steiner Ried Gaisberg (230-330m), named after a historic hermitage. Surrounded by forest, a unique microclimate emerges. The subsoil of Gföhl gneiss, mica schist and amphibolite lends this Riesling its characteristic mineral precision.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried monkfish with saffron sauce, capon with morels, Thai curry with prawns, mature Comté or Gruyère d’Alpage. The spicy complexity also pairs well with Indian spices.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a wine from the legendary cellars of Nikolaihof, Austria’s oldest wine estate. As a Privatreserve and biodynamically vinified (Demeter), this Riesling demonstrates how majestically the variety can mature in the Wachau. A wine for connoisseurs that proves: great Rieslings are immortal.
