Wine Description for Gimmeldinger Biengarten Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2022 1500ml Magnum by Christmann

Character
Weingut Christmann ranks among the top producers of the Palatinate and demonstrates impressively with this Spätburgunder from the Gimmeldinger Biengarten that the region has far more to offer than just Riesling. The VDP Erste Lage classification underscores the exceptional quality of this single vineyard site. Matured in a magnum bottle, this 2022 promises a slower, more harmonious development – a format that particularly benefits demanding Pinot Noir. With 13% alcohol, the wine presents itself with restraint and elegance, very much in the spirit of modern German Burgundy school, which places finesse before power.
Terroir & Origin
The Gimmeldinger Biengarten lies on the eastern edge of the Haardt mountains in the Mittelhaardt, the qualitative heart of the Palatinate. The vineyard site benefits from calcareous soils with loess-loam overlay, which lend the Spätburgunder structure and mineral depth. The mild, almost Mediterranean climate of the Palatinate is moderated here by the hillside location and cooling air currents from the Pfälzerwald – ideal conditions for aromatic ripeness whilst maintaining freshness. Christmann manages his vineyards according to biodynamic principles, which is reflected in the vibrancy and precision of the wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder, the German expression of Pinot Noir, achieves in the hands of Steffen Christmann an expressiveness that sets international standards. The philosophy of the house relies on spontaneous fermentation, careful extraction and maturation in French barriques, without allowing wood to dominate the wine. The 2022 vintage was characterised by a warm, dry summer that produced concentrated, ripe grapes. The result is a Spätburgunder that combines fruit clarity with Burgundian elegance – silky in texture, precise in aromatics, with that distinctive tension that distinguishes great Pinots.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Spätburgunder calls for cuisine that respects its finesse: roasted duck with cherry sauce, veal fillet with morels, Coq au Vin or aged Comté. It also shows its class with game dishes such as venison loin or with mushroom risotto infused with truffle.
