Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru „Les Cazetiers“ AOC 2022 by Bruno Clair

Character
Bruno Clair’s Gevrey-Chambertin from the Premier Cru vineyard site Les Cazetiers embodies the classical elegance of this renowned parcel on the upper slope of Gevrey. The vineyard, situated directly below the Grand Cru Clos de Bèze, produces wines of remarkable finesse and depth. Clair, one of Burgundy’s most respected winemakers, is renowned for his purist approach and his ability to bring terroir unadulterated into the glass. The 2022 vintage is distinguished by its freshness and precision – qualities particularly valued in an increasingly warming Burgundy.
Terroir & Origin
Les Cazetiers extends across approximately 9 hectares on calcareous soils with stony subsoil, which provides excellent drainage. The sloping vineyard site at around 280 metres elevation with south-easterly exposure ensures optimal sunlight whilst maintaining freshness. This combination gives the wines their characteristic tension between power and elegance. Bruno Clair cultivates old vines here that root deeply and deliver mineral complexity. The 2022 vintage benefited from a cooler, classic growing cycle that preserved natural acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir reveals its aristocratic side in Les Cazetiers – less opulent than in lower-lying sites, yet with greater minerality and ageing potential. Bruno Clair works with spontaneous fermentation, moderate new oak and extended ageing on fine lees. His philosophy aims for transparency rather than extraction, structure through precision rather than concentration. With moderate 13% alcohol, the wine retains its Burgundian drinkability and agility.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands thoughtful combinations: game birds such as pheasant or guinea fowl, roasted pigeon with mushrooms, calf’s sweetbreads or a mature Époisses. The wine also shows its versatility with duck breast with cherry sauce or braised beef shin. The elegance of the vineyard site harmonises particularly well with refined mushroom dishes and truffle-based preparations.
