Wine Description for Baumgarten Pinot Blanc Federspiel-Kabinett 1987 1500ml Magnum from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Brilliant pale straw yellow – after nearly four decades still displaying remarkable brilliance and luminosity, testament to the extraordinary vitality of this wine.
Nose
An opulent, almost lavish aromatic spectrum that impressively demonstrates the ageing potential of biodynamically farmed Wachau Pinot Blancs. White flowers form the foundation, layered above with lemon, ripe pears and hazelnut. The development has brought forth fascinating tertiary aromas: vanilla crescents, apple tart, buttery biscuit notes. Particularly remarkable are the herbal facets of rosemary and thyme – unconventional, almost eccentric, yet perfectly integrated.
Palate
The vibrancy of this 1987 is simply astounding. A lively acidity carries the wine with playful lightness, supported by a fine, yoghurt-like texture from malolactic fermentation, which unites freshness and creaminess in rare harmony. The wine displays impressive concentration and juicy intensity whilst maintaining feather-light elegance – an apparent contradiction that is effortlessly resolved here.
Finish
Persistence and finesse to the very last moment. The aftertaste is long, precise and suffused with freshness that makes one forget the wine’s actual age.
Terroir & Origin
From the Schlossberg vineyard site in Baumgarten, cadastral municipality of Mautern. The biodynamic farming of Nikolaihof, practised since the 1970s, enabled this extraordinary longevity and expressiveness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Blanc in Federspiel quality, 11.5% alcohol. Gentle malolactic fermentation lends the wine additional texture and complexity without compromising freshness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried char or brown trout with brown butter, veal schnitzel with parsley potatoes, asparagus risotto, aged Comté or Beaufort. The herbal notes harmonise beautifully with Mediterranean-spiced poultry.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 in the rare magnum bottle (1500ml). A living historical document and proof that great Austrian white wines can age for decades. The fact that the taster secured two cases speaks volumes.
