Wine Description for From the Gardens Yellow Muscat Dry 2023 by Nikolaihof
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous lemon yellow with fine greenish reflections – clear and brilliant in the glass, as one would expect from a purist-vinified Muscat.
- Nose
- Here the Nikolaihof approach reveals itself in all its consistency: this is no perfumed Muscat charmer, but a wine of contemplative, quiet precision. Beneath the restrained fruit – yellow plum, vineyard peach, mirabelle, persimmon, lychee and a hint of pineapple – unfolds a taut herbal spectrum: lemongrass, mint, chervil, lemon thyme, lemon balm and fresh coriander. This aromatics work almost ethereally, carried by floral clarity and a mineral suggestion that announces itself beneath the surface. Not a loud wine – rather a quiet expression of precision.
- Palate
- On the palate, the true essence of this Muscat reveals itself: substantial, dense, with perceptible grip and a clearly defined, fine tannin structure. The phenolics are precisely calibrated and lend the wine a structured, slightly saline tension. Here fruit and stoniness combine into a harmonious, tactile experience – a wine that speaks more through haptics than primary fruit. Yellow peach and citrus blossom at the entry, then increasingly replaced by herbal and mineral notes. The mid-palate, perfectly integrated acidity (4.8 g/l with only 1.0 g/l residual sugar) carries the wine tautly, without harshness.
- Finish
- Long, herbal-spicy, with fine pressure. A Muscat that does not seduce, but guides – clear, purist, invigorating.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines grow on loess with Danube gravel in the Wachau – a terroir that gives the wine its mineral foundation and taut structure.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Yellow Muscat in biodynamic purity: one batch undergoes cold maceration overnight (which explains the phenolics), the second is pressed immediately. After approximately six months of maturation, the wine is bottled on a fruit day – entirely in keeping with the biodynamic philosophy of Nikolaihof.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- With pan-seared scallops with herb oil, pike-perch on fennel vegetables, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, Thai glass noodle salad or goat’s cheese with herbs. The structure also pairs well with mildly spicy Asian cuisine.
- Special Features
- An anti-Muscat in the best sense: those seeking aromatic opulence will be disappointed. Those who appreciate precision, drinkability and biodynamic consistency will find here one of the most intellectual representatives of this grape variety.
