Wine Description for Pinot Blanc “Ton & Mergel” South Styria DAC 2025 by Tement

Character
A precise, straightforward white wine with a clear sense of origin. The name says it all: clay and marl – two defining soil types of the South Styrian wine landscape – shape this Pinot Blanc into a wine that thrives not on opulence but on mineral tension and drinkability. With just 12.0% vol. and a dry style, it remains light-footed and approachable, without sacrificing depth.
Terroir & Origin
The South Styria region ranks among Central Europe’s most fascinating wine areas: a hilly landscape on the border with Slovenia, characterised by steep vineyard sites, continental influences and remarkable soil diversity. The Tement winery has been one of the region’s most reliable interpreters for decades. The eponymous combination of clay – for freshness and structure – and marl – for mineral depth and finesse – points directly to the geological roots of this wine. Since the introduction of the South Styria DAC, the region has established a clear identity, with Pinot Blanc recognised as one of its leading varieties.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Blanc is a grape variety with a long tradition in Styria and its own distinctive character – quieter and less aromatically expressive than Sauvignon Blanc, yet distinguished by an elegant, creamy texture and natural acidity structure. Tement’s signature stands for careful hand-harvesting, gentle processing and a vinification that puts terroir centre stage without overworking the fruit. The designation “Ton & Mergel” points to a terroir-focused entry-level wine that combines accessibility with authenticity of origin.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile table companion. Excellent with grilled fish, pike-perch fillet with buttered vegetables or risotto with spring vegetables. Equally suited to Styrian cheese, vegetable quiche or a simple roast veal. Also a convincing choice as an aperitif with antipasti or bruschetta.
