Wine Description for Terre de Pierre AOP 2024 by Luneau-Papin
- Character
- The Terre de Pierre embodies the mineral essence of the Muscadet appellation in its purest form. Luneau-Papin, one of the region’s most renowned families, produces here an uncompromising Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine that demonstrates what Melon de Bourgogne can achieve on the right soils. The name „Terre de Pierre“ – stone earth – is programmatic: this is a wine that speaks more of the subsoil than of fruit, a masterclass in terroir expression.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyards lie on the characteristic gneiss soils of the southern Loire, which impart the wine’s distinctive minerality. These ancient metamorphic rocks, interspersed with quartz and mica, force the vines to root deeply and imbue the wine with a saline, stony texture. The Atlantic climate with its cool breezes from the nearby ocean provides the necessary freshness and moderate alcohol levels – here 12% vol. – that enable an elegant, approachable style.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Melon de Bourgogne, originally from Burgundy, finds its true home here. The variety may seem neutral elsewhere, but on the Loire’s stone soils it becomes a precise terroir translator. Luneau-Papin practises traditional vinification with extended ageing on lees (sur lie), which gives the wine texture, complexity and that subtle creaminess that distinguishes it from simple Muscadets. The 2024 vintage promises the typical tension between freshness and substance.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A classic companion to oysters and seafood – the geographical proximity to the Atlantic is no coincidence. Excellent also with Loire Valley goat’s cheese, steamed fish, scallops or a simple sole with butter. The mineral structure harmonises perfectly with sushi and raw fish. A versatile food companion that never dominates, but rather complements.
