In the glass

  1. Colour

Ruby red with garnet reflections, typical of a cool vintage.

  2. Nose

Red berry fruit such as cherry and raspberry, floral notes of violet, accompanied by delicate spice and an earthy depth.

  3. Palate

Silky tannins, vibrant acidity and precise fruit shaped by whole-bunch fermentation; the wine feels taut and profound without any dominance of wood.

  4. Character

A neo-classical Burgundy of great individuality and ageing potential, revealing the elegance of the Corton hill in unsulphured purity.

  5. Pairing

Pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast with cherries, mushroom dishes such as chanterelles in cream, or mature Comté.

  6. Notes

Bottled entirely without added sulphur, produced biodynamically at one of the few estates that ploughs its vineyards on Corton with horses; whole-bunch fermentation lends the wine distinctive spice and structure.

Tasting note

Colour & appearance
A luminous, transparent ruby red with violet reflections – typical of a young, unsulphured Pinot Noir, whose freshness is visually underscored.
Nose
The aromatic profile displays remarkable clarity: red cherries and wild strawberries meet floral notes of violet and a hint of black pepper. These are complemented by a fine, earthy spiciness reminiscent of damp leaves.
Palate
On the palate, the wine reveals itself as silky and slender, supported by a vibrant acidity. The tannins are finely grained and elegantly integrated. Notes of red berries and cherry fruit dominate, underpinned by a subtle, herbal spiciness.
Finish
The finish is long and precise, with a saline note and an aftertaste of dark berries and delicate spice. A wine that still has years of maturation ahead of it.
Terroir & origin
The Premier Cru vineyard site Île des Vergelesses is located in Pernand-Vergelesses at the foot of the Corton hill. Here, the vines grow on calcareous soils that lend the Pinot Noir its characteristic finesse and structure.
Grape variety & vinification
100% Pinot Noir. The grapes come from biodynamic cultivation (Demeter-certified since 2011). Vinification takes place without fining or filtration; this cuvée has been bottled entirely without added sulphur since 2017. Whole-bunch fermentation has been standard practice since 2011, and ageing is carried out with a maximum of 15–20% new wood.
Food recommendations
An ideal companion to pan-fried duck breast with cherries, rack of lamb with a herb crust, or ripe Époisses. Also an excellent choice with grilled vegetables or mushroom dishes.
Special features
This wine is a rare example of an unsulphured Premier Cru from Burgundy. Domaine Chandon de Briailles is the only estate in Burgundy to work nearly 14 hectares entirely with horses. The sulphur-free bottling underscores the purity and authenticity of the terroir.
