Wine Description for Neuburger Dry 2014 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Pale greenish-yellow with luminous reflections – a wine that carries its ten years of maturity with grace.
Nose
A fascinating interplay of aromas that recalls the finest Baden Silvaner – no coincidence given this crossing. The maturity of the 2014 vintage shows itself distinctly: mushroom, onion confit, hay and straw dominate alongside vegetal notes. It is an honest, earthy nose that makes no concessions to modern fruitiness, instead allowing terroir and time to speak.
Palate
Substantial and characterful, this archive release presents itself with conviction. The structure is expansive, almost meditative, with herbaceous-bitter tones reminiscent of unripe tannins. At only 12% alcohol, a true lightweight that nonetheless possesses personality. The vintage’s reduced acidity lends the wine a soft, accessible texture.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the vineyard sites Bischofpoint (Rigolboden with loess and loam, 246-340m) and Im Weingebirge (paragneiss with loess topsoil). This geological diversity of the Wachau shapes the wine’s mineral character. The biodynamically managed Nikolaihof allows its wines time – this archive release from 2024 proves it impressively.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Neuburger, a natural crossing of Roter Veltliner × Silvaner, is a rarity in Austria with only 500 hectares. Nikolaihof is among the few producers who pay attention to this underestimated variety and grant it the necessary maturation time.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This wine demands rich accompaniments: poultry ragout with cream sauce, fish stew with butter, calf’s sweetbreads or mushroom risotto. The substantial texture and herbaceous notes harmonise perfectly with creamy, umami-rich dishes.
Special Features
A bold archive release that demonstrates not every wine needs to shout about primary fruit. This is wine for connoisseurs who appreciate maturity, terroir and individuality – an authentic piece of Wachau history in a glass.
