Neuburger is one of the quiet, profound treasures of the Austrian wine world. Originating from a natural cross between Rotgipfler and Roter Veltliner, this traditional grape variety yields wines of remarkable texture. In the glass, it presents itself as creamy and melting, characterised by notes of fresh walnut, yellow apple and fine herbal spice, accompanied by a pleasantly mild acidity. Just how grandly Neuburger can age is proven by the Nikolaihof estate in the Wachau, whose characterful bottlings develop a fascinating, mineral depth over the years. That the variety also works wonderfully in a light-hearted style is shown in the lively Viennese Pétillant Naturel from Hajszan Neumann, where it provides structure in interplay with Müller-Thurgau and Muskateller. At the table, Neuburger shines particularly well alongside creamy risotto or white meat.
