Wine description for Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru AOC 2023 from Henri & Gilles Buisson
In the rolling hills of the Côte de Beaune, where the history of viticulture is deeply inscribed in the landscape, the Buisson family cultivates its vineyards with a care that has been passed down through generations. This Corton-Charlemagne, a Grand Cru of majestic presence, embodies the essence of a terroir that once belonged to the Emperor Charlemagne himself - a historical depth that manifests itself in the glass.
The roots of the Buisson family go back to the 12th century, and their connection to viticulture has been documented since 1758. What Henri Buisson instinctively practised in the 1960s - natural cultivation without chemical intervention - was officially sealed with the organic label under the leadership of his grandsons Franck and Frédérick in 2009 and has been continued in accordance with the strict Biodyvin guidelines since 2018. This continuity is reflected in the authenticity of their wines.
Visual impression
In the glass, the Corton-Charlemagne presents itself with a radiant, pale golden hue with silvery reflections - a crystalline clarity that already heralds the mineral precision that characterises this Grand Cru.
Nose
The aromatic development begins reservedly, almost closed, only to open up in layers with increasing aeration. Initially, notes of white flowers, green apples and citrus fruits appear, underpinned by a subtle flinty minerality. Over time, hints of fresh almond, hazelnut and a hint of brioche are added - evidence of the precise barrel ageing that enriches the wine without dominating it.
Palate
The true greatness of this wine is revealed on the palate. An impressive structure, carried by a lively acidity that runs through the wine like a silver thread. The fruit flavours of ripe pear, quince and citrus peel are accompanied by a profound minerality reminiscent of wet limestone and salty breeze notes. The wine has a remarkable tension between power and finesse, between fullness and precision. A subtle spiciness reminiscent of white pepper and ginger lingers on the long, vibrant finish.
The moderate residual sweetness - barely perceptible in the first of five categories - emphasises the dry, purist character of this wine, while the alcohol content of 13.0% is perfectly integrated into the structure and lends the wine a gentle warmth without ever being overpowering.
General information
The 2023 vintage shows its best side in this wine - a year that produced wines of remarkable balance despite climatic challenges. The Chardonnay grapes, from the chalky topsoil of the Corton hill, were harvested with precise timing to ensure optimal ripeness while maintaining acidity structure. The artisanal vinification - gentle pressing, natural yeasts, restrained use of oak - allows the terroir to express itself unadulterated.
This wine is still young and will benefit from longer bottle ageing. Its true complexity will unfold over the next 7-15 years, probably reaching its peak between 2028 and 2033.
Food pairing suggestions
The nobility of this Corton-Charlemagne calls for dishes of corresponding finesse. It harmonises excellently with Lobster in butter sauce, Scallops with citrus flavours or a classic Poulet de Bresse à la crème. Also to matured Comté or Beaufort it makes a remarkable accompaniment. For vegetarian combinations, we recommend Risotto with summer truffles or Fried asparagus with hollandaise sauce.
Serve this Grand Cru at around 12-14°C, ideally in a generous Burgundy glass that offers space for the aromas to develop. Decanting an hour before drinking can enhance the expressiveness of young vintages.
