Wine Description for Chardonnay “Les Glapigny” VdF 2023 by Bruno Clavelier

Character
Bruno Clavelier, renowned for his uncompromising work in Vosne-Romanée, presents with this Chardonnay a wine under the designation Vin de France – a conscious decision that grants him maximum freedom beyond the strict appellation regulations. The Les Glapigny embodies a purist, terroir-oriented approach, where the natural expression of the grape takes centre stage. With moderate alcohol content and dry orientation, this Chardonnay demonstrates freshness and precision over opulent richness.
Terroir & Origin
Although declared as Vin de France, the grapes undoubtedly originate from Burgundy, where Clavelier has his roots. The classification outside the AOC hierarchy allows the winemaker to blend grapes from different parcels or apply experimental vinification methods. The Burgundian limestone terroir nevertheless shapes the DNA of this wine, lending it that mineral tension and elegance that distinguishes Chardonnay from this region. The 2023 vintage brought, after a challenging spring, a sunny summer that enabled physiological ripeness whilst maintaining acidity structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Clavelier, an advocate of natural winemaking, works with minimal intervention. His Chardonnay is likely vinified with spontaneous fermentation using wild yeasts, probably in neutral vessels or used barrels, so as not to overlay the fruit clarity. The philosophy aims for transparency and drinkability rather than demonstrative opulence. Typical of modern Burgundian craftsmanship: reduced oak usage, extended lees ageing for texture, no or minimal fining and filtration.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This precise, fresh Chardonnay harmonises beautifully with seafood, particularly scallops or oysters. Classic Burgundian combinations such as Poulet de Bresse with cream sauce or pike-perch in butter sauce underscore the elegant structure. Also with goat’s cheese, Comté or a creamy risotto with mushrooms, the wine reveals its finesse. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal companion for dishes with citrus or herb notes.
