Wine Description for Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune rouge Altitude AOP 2023 by Boris Champy

Character
Boris Champy, renowned for his uncompromising work in the vineyard and his commitment to natural vinification methods, presents with this Bourgogne from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune a Pinot Noir of remarkable clarity. The name „Altitude“ is programmatic: the higher-altitude parcels of this appellation produce wines distinguished by freshness, precision and a vibrant acidity structure. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol content, this 2023 embodies precisely that Burgundian elegance which Champy pursues – cool, tense, authentic.
Terroir & Origin
The Hautes-Côtes de Beaune extend across the hills west of the prestigious Côte de Beaune at elevations between 300 and 400 metres. This cooler microclimate delays ripeness and preserves the natural acidity of the grapes – a decisive factor in times of climate change. The chalky soils with marl and limestone components lend these wines that mineral tension which makes Burgundian Pinot Noir so unmistakable. Champy deliberately utilises this elevation to produce wines of freshness and drinkability.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir in its Burgundian homeland – scarcely any grape variety responds more sensitively to terroir and the winemaker’s signature. Boris Champy, who is committed to biodynamic viticulture, works with minimal intervention: natural yeasts, restrained use of sulphur, no fining or filtration. The 2023 vintage benefited from a balanced growing cycle with cool nights that favoured aromatic precision and freshness. The result is a Pinot of red fruit, floral notes and a texture that combines substance with lightness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Bourgogne calls for uncomplicated yet flavourful cuisine: Coq au Vin, Boeuf Bourguignon or a simple rotisserie chicken with herbs. It also harmonises beautifully with aged Comté, mushroom dishes or a Terrine de Campagne. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal companion for sea trout or duck breast with cherry sauce.
