Wine Description for Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune rouge Altitude AOP 2022 by Boris Champy
- Colour & Appearance
- Transparent, luminous ruby red with crystalline clarity – a Pinot Noir that makes no secret of its origins in cool high-altitude vineyards. The clarity in the glass promises elegance and precision.
- Nose
- Restrained yet complex: undergrowth and cedarwood form the initial impression, accompanied by fine balsamic notes. Beneath these unfold wild raspberries, red mulberries and sour cherries – bright fruit, never jammy. Subtle spice notes of allspice and juniper lend additional depth to the bouquet. A Burgundy that communicates the coolness of its high-altitude site with every breath.
- Palate
- Crystalline and refined, the Altitude presents itself on the palate. The ruby fruit shines with a purity reminiscent of cut glass. Hedonistic and joyful, yet without any heaviness – smooth and seamlessly flowing. The fresh acidity drives the wine forward and underscores its transparent character. At a moderate 12% alcohol, everything remains in balance, nothing intrudes.
- Finish
- Medium length with sustained fruit clarity and a fine mineral coolness that recalls the chalky soils. The acidity remains present and leaves a refreshing, appetite-stimulating impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- From two parcels in Nantoux: En Bignon with loamy soil on hard limestone and Le Clou with white limestone and pebbles on yellow marl. The Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, once dismissed as cool, represent for Boris Champy the climatic future of Burgundy – a thesis that this 2022 impressively substantiates.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Pinot Noir from hand-harvested grapes. Traditional low-trained vines (10,000 stocks/ha) in Guyot pruning. Gentle extraction with 50% whole-bunch fermentation in wooden barrels, followed by 12 months of ageing with 15% new barrels – enough to provide structure without masking the fruit.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Grilled mackerel with muhammara, aubergine caviar with pomegranate seeds, veal loin poached in red wine with young vegetables, pan-fried duck breast with cherry sauce or mushroom risotto.
- Special Features
- Boris Champy took over in 2019 Burgundy’s first Demeter-certified winery. His experience at Dominus, Louis Latour and Clos de Lambrays flows into every aspect of biodynamic viticulture – a Burgundy with a vision for the future.
