Zweigelt

As a cross between Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent, Zweigelt combines the best of its parents: juicy sour cherry and a charming, red-berried spice, supported by a velvety tannin structure. In the Austrian wine-growing regions, the variety proves to be enormously versatile. That it produces excellent, refreshing rosés is demonstrated by the Fritsch winery in the Wagram. In Burgenland, on the other hand, the heart of the grape beats for characterful single-varietal wines and classic cuvées. How uncomplicated and approachable Zweigelt can taste in tandem with its genetic relatives is proven by Heinrich with living, low-intervention wines, while Nittnaus Anita & Hans coax a deep, structured spice from the variety, both as a single varietal and in the traditional Pannobile blend.
