Vernaccia
Also known as: Bervedino, Vernaccia Bianca di San Gimignano, Vernaccia di Toscana
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of Italy’s oldest documented grape varieties – first mentioned in 1276, firmly rooted in Tuscany, nowhere else. For a long time it was underestimated, reduced to mass production, but when someone works with care, it shows what it’s capable of: bone-dry minerality, citrus-clear acidity, a characteristic bitter note on the finish that gives length rather than fullness.
At Montenidoli, Vernaccia is treated as what it is – not an everyday variety, but the expression of a place. Elisabetta Faguioli has been working consistently organically for decades, the wines are direct, unadorned, without the smoothing effect of new barrels. This is Vernaccia in its purest form: transparent to the Triassic limestone that lies in the soil here.
