Wine description for River VdF rouge 2025 by Matassa
- Character
- Tom Lubbe, the South African winemaker behind Matassa, has created a remarkable counterpoint to powerful Roussillon wines with his „River“ series. This Syrah with moderate 11% alcohol embodies Lubbe’s philosophy of lightness and drinkability. The wine presents itself as accessible and lively – a vin de soif that prioritises freshness and elegance over concentration.
- Terroir & Origin
- Roussillon, squeezed between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, is known for its powerful, sun-blessed wines. Yet Lubbe deliberately uses cooler vineyard sites and earlier harvest times to challenge this regional convention. The Vin de France designation allows him maximum freedom to pursue unconventional paths. The Mediterranean climate with its Tramontana winds ensures healthy grapes, whilst the old vines are rooted in sparse soils.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Syrah shows a completely different face here than in concentrated appellation wines: fresh, peppery, with red fruit instead of dark opulence. Lubbe’s minimalist intervention approach – spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal sulphur – allows the character of the grape variety and vintage to shine through unaltered. The deliberately low alcohol concentration results from early harvest and gentle extraction, yielding a wine of remarkable energy and tension.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The lightness and freshness of this Syrah make it the ideal companion for grilled sardines, ratatouille or Provençal herb dishes. It also harmonises beautifully with charcuterie, spiced lentil stews or anchovy pizza. Served lightly chilled, it pairs perfectly with North African tagines or grilled vegetables with harissa. A versatile everyday wine that also brings pleasure on its own.
