Wine Description for Pinot Noir Grand P (from Grand Cru Pfersigberg) AC 2023 by Domaine Albert Mann
- Colour & Appearance
- Muted violet-red with youthful depth, minimal lightening towards the rim reveals the freshness of this young Pinot Noir.
- Nose
- Initially rather closed, the Grand P unfolds its seductive aromatic spectrum with air contact: sour cherries, wild raspberries, blackcurrant and fresh blackberries form the foundation. As it opens further, dark chocolate, earth, tobacco and truffle emerge, accentuated by fine spice notes – cinnamon, juniper, clove. Above all hovers a distinctive stony minerality that lends this wine something mystical.
- Palate
- Powerful and demanding, the 2023 presents itself on the palate. The sour cherry fruit is carried by a youthful, pronounced acid-tannin structure – a wine that currently shows restraint but already reveals its enormous potential. The combination of concentration and precision is impressive, the fruit explosion in the expansive finish remarkable. Despite its power, it displays surprising elegance and finesse.
- Finish
- Long, expressive and characterised by vibrant freshness. The red berry aromas linger, underpinned by mineral tension.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the Grand Cru Pfersigberg near Eguisheim, a name traceable back to the 16th century. The vineyard faces south-southwest on calcareous sandstone – a terroir that gives this Pinot Noir its characteristic minerality and structure. The approximately 40-year-old vines yield concentrated, characterful grapes.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Hand-harvested Pinot Noir, vinified according to the principle of infusion rather than extraction. 25% whole-bunch fermentation in open tank, spontaneous fermentation and malolactic fermentation in spring. 17 months ageing in barriques (11% new), unfiltered. This gentle vinification preserves fruit precision and elegance.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Roasted duck breast, game dishes, Coq au Vin, aged Comté or Époisses. The structure demands robust, aromatic dishes.
- Special Features
- An Alsatian Pinot Noir that sets standards – a characterful wine with great ageing potential. Already enjoyable now with sufficient decanting (several hours), it will gain in complexity and harmony over the coming years. Patience will be rewarded.
