Wine Description for Riesling Sankt Nikolaus Grosses Gewächs 2022 1500ml Magnum by Peter Jakob Kühn

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow with pale golden shimmer – a wine that already reveals its maturity and concentration in the glass.
Nose
Fascinatingly multi-layered and typical of Kühn’s signature style: the bouquet oscillates between reductive notes of smoke and flint and slightly oxidative hints of mellow apple and apple skin. Interwoven are lemon oil, apricot, hops, a whisper of blonde tobacco and fine yeast notes – an aromatic tension that reflects the biodynamic élevage.
Palate
Paradoxical and brilliant in equal measure: the wine initially floats airy and light across the tongue, then reveals an earthy stoniness and inner power. Juicy, saline, piquant – with a taut, charming acidity that never turns sharp. The deep energy and mouth-watering salinity in the finish bear witness to the minerality of the terroir.
Finish
Long, saline-mineral and carried by vibrant freshness. The salinity lingers and leaves a penetrating, almost meditative impression.
Terroir & Origin
The Sankt Nikolaus is Kühn’s prestige vineyard site in Mittelheim, situated directly on the Rhine with southern exposure. The vines, some up to 65 years old, are rooted in calcareous, sandy loess, interspersed with terrace sediments and marine sand from the Alzey Formation – a soil that gives this Riesling its characteristic minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressing over several hours, spontaneous fermentation and 16 months of élevage on full lees in traditional large wooden casks and double casks. Kühn’s biodynamic, minimalist intervention philosophy allows the wine time to develop – the result is complex and authentic.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried turbot, scallops with lemon butter, calf’s sweetbreads, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or aged Comté. The magnum bottle makes it an ideal companion for festive occasions.
Special Features
A Grosses Gewächs with soul and character – not a crowd-pleasing mainstream Riesling, but a terroir-driven wine with edges and character. The magnum bottle also promises excellent ageing potential over the next 10-15 years.
