Wine description for Riesling Sankt Nikolaus Grosses Gewächs 2022 1500ml Magnum from Peter Jakob Kühn

Colour & appearance
Bright straw yellow with a pale golden shimmer - a wine that reveals its maturity and concentration in the glass.
Nose
Fascinatingly complex and typical of Kühn's signature style: The bouquet oscillates between Reductive notes of smoke and flint and slightly oxidative hints of crunchy apple and apple peel. In between unfold Lemon oil, Apricot, Hops, a touch blond tobacco and fine yeast notes - an aromatic tension that reflects the biodynamic cultivation.
Palate
Paradoxical and brilliant at the same time: the wine initially floats Light and airy over the tongue, but then reveals a earthy stoniness and inner strength. Juicy, savoury, spicy - with a taut, charming acidity, that never appears pointed. The Deep energy and mouth-watering saltiness in the finish testify to the minerality of the terroir.
Departure
Long, salty-mineral and carried by a lively freshness. The saltiness lingers and leaves a haunting, almost meditative impression.
Terroir & origin
The Sankt Nikolaus is Kühn's prestigious location in Mittelheim, situated directly on the Rhine with southern orientation. The up to 65 year old vines rooted in calcareous, sandy loess, interspersed with terrace sediments and sea sand from the Alzey formation - a soil that gives this Riesling its characteristic minerality.
Grape variety & vinification
Hand-picked, all-wheel pressing over several hours, spontaneous fermentation and Matured for 16 months on the lees in traditional barrels and double barrels. Kühn's biodynamic, minimal interventionist philosophy gives the wine time to develop - the result is complex and authentic.
Food pairing suggestions
Fried turbot, Scallops with lemon butter, Sweetbreads, Asparagus with hollandaise sauce or matured Comté. The magnum bottle makes it the ideal companion for festive occasions.
Special features
A Großes Gewächs with soul and character - not a pleasing mainstream Riesling, but a Terroir wine with rough edges. The magnum bottle also promises excellent ageing potential over the next 10-15 years.
