Wine Description for Riesling Sankt Nikolaus Grosses Gewächs 2022 1500ml Magnum by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous straw yellow with golden reflections – a wine that already promises depth and substance in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose is a fascinating interplay of contrasts, as is typical of Kühn: A slightly reductive pole with hints of smoke and wet stone meets a subtly oxidative side with notes of bletted apple, apple skin and yeast. Between these unfold elegant nuances of lemon oil, blonde tobacco, fine patisserie, fresh herbs and ripe apricot – complex, multifaceted and of unusual composure.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Sankt Nikolaus reveals an apparently effortless lightness – floating, airy, almost ethereal – yet counterbalanced by a deep, earth-bound power. Juicy and lively, with piquant stoniness and a taut, yet charmingly integrated acidity. The texture is silky, the energy palpable and compelling.
- Finish
- The finish is long, mineral and characterised by an impressive mouth-watering salinity – the unmistakable hallmark of this extraordinary vineyard site. A finale that lingers and invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Mittelheimer Sankt Nikolaus lies directly on the Rhine, at the ferry to Ingelheim, with a gentle southern slope. The soil of calcareous, sandy loess, interspersed with terrace sediments and marine sands of the Alzey Formation, gives the wine its characteristic minerality and salinity. The vines are up to 65 years old – a treasure that articulates itself unmistakably in the glass.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling, hand-harvested and vinified as whole-bunch pressing. Spontaneous fermentation without intervention in the natural must composition, followed by 16 months ageing on full lees in traditional large wooden casks and double casks (1,200 l and 2,400 l). A wine born from deepest conviction in the vineyard and cellar – minimalist, uncompromising, authentic. With only 11.5% alcohol, it remains strikingly fresh and drinkable despite all its depth.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The lively acidity and pronounced salinity make this wine an ideal companion for turbot with beurre blanc, grilled lobster or scallops with lemon foam. It also harmonises beautifully with aged Comté or a classic Quiche Lorraine. In magnum format, a wine for special occasions and patient drinkers.
- Special Features
- As a Grosses Gewächs – the highest quality level of the VDP – the Sankt Nikolaus represents the heart of Peter Jakob Kühn’s biodynamically managed estate. The 1500-ml magnum bottle guarantees slower, more even maturation and makes this wine an outstanding candidate for the cellar: Drink from now, peak likely between 2027 and 2038.
