Wine Description for Klausberg Riesling Privatreserve Trocken 2005 1500ml Magnum by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Deep golden saffron yellow – the colour of a Riesling that has matured for almost two decades in bottle, transforming its youthful freshness into dignified maturity.
Nose
A tension-laden bouquet of rare complexity: carambola, lychee and dried mango dominate initially, followed by butter-browned pineapple. With air contact, a fascinating spice layer unfolds – star anise, saffron, curry and lemongrass – an aromatic kaleidoscope that impressively demonstrates the ageing potential of great Wachau Rieslings.
Palate
Dense texture with remarkably phenolic grip, which lends the wine structure and staying power. A saline minerality runs through the body, lending it tension. The fullness on the palate is accompanied by refinement and depth, whilst a ripe, apple-like acidity provides freshness and drinking flow – a paradox of power and elegance.
Finish
Long, delicious and marked by mineral precision. The acidity carries through to the end, leaving a fresh, vibrant aftertaste.
Terroir & Origin
The Klause, a terraced vineyard site in the uppermost part of the Riede Gaisberg near Stein, lies at 230-330 metres elevation with south-easterly exposure. The subsoil of Gföhl gneiss, mica schist and amphibolite shapes the mineral signature. The forest surroundings create a unique microclimate – cool, well-ventilated, tension-laden.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried monkfish with saffron sauce, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, foie gras with mango chutney, aged Comté or Alpine cheese, Thai curry with coconut milk.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a rarity from the biodynamically managed Nikolaihof, Austria’s oldest winery. The magnum bottle has provided this Riesling with two decades of optimal ageing conditions. A true Privatreserve that demonstrates why Wachau Riesling ranks among the longest-lived white wines in the world.
