Wine description for Gimmeldinger Biengarten Sekt Brut Nature 2020 by Christmann & Kauffmann
- Character
- A sparkling wine of almost radical precision: dry, slender, with a taut spine of acidity and a fine, persistent mousse. Riesling contributes citrus, white flowers and that cool minerality which distinguishes great German Sekt from all others. With no dosage, nothing is concealed – the wine stands naked in the glass, gaining honesty and depth as a result. This is not festive pomp, but quiet concentration.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Gimmeldinger Biengarten lies on the Mittelhaardt, in the heart of the Palatinate, on soils of limestone and coloured sandstone. Cool nights descending from the Palatinate Forest preserve the acidic freshness in the grapes that great sparkling wines require. It is one of those places where you sense that Germany has long possessed the potential for world-class Sekt – it simply needed someone to take it seriously.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling, vinified by a trio that can rightly be called a dream team: Steffen Christmann, VDP President and eighth-generation winemaker, his daughter Sophie, and Mathieu Kauffmann, who spent thirteen years as Chef de Cave at Bollinger learning what makes timeless sparkling wines. Their Sekt estate, founded in 2019, is Germany’s first purely biodynamic Sekt producer and a member of respekt-BIODYN. Their work follows a single creed: terroir over technology. Spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks, at least 31 months on the lees, zero dosage – no sulphur, no fining. The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates and reach the press within minutes. For the planned single-vineyard Sekts from the Biengarten, five to eight years on the lees are envisaged – an ambition unprecedented in Germany, making it clear: here the aim is to compete in the Champagne league without denying their Palatinate roots.
- Food Pairings
- The uncompromising dryness and vibrant acidity make this Sekt a versatile everyday wine. It shines alongside oysters and raw fish, sashimi as much as grilled prawns. Asparagus with a light sauce, smoked trout or a simple chicken with lemon and herbs also find an astute counterpart in it. Those preferring something more rustic might opt for Pfälzer Saumagen (stuffed pig’s stomach) – the acidity cuts confidently through its richness. And enjoyed solo, as an aperitif, it tells its story most clearly.
