Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru „Clos Saint Jacques“ AOC 2022 by Bruno Clair

Character
The Clos Saint Jacques is regarded by connoisseurs as one of the most exceptional Premier Crus of Burgundy – a vineyard site that achieves Grand Cru quality. Bruno Clair, whose domaine ranks among the most respected producers of Gevrey-Chambertin, crafts a Pinot Noir of remarkable precision and depth. The 2022 vintage promises, despite climatic challenges, that crystalline clarity and Burgundian elegance for which this site is renowned. At 13.0% alcohol, the wine displays classical restraint, without modern over-extraction.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Saint Jacques lies on the eastern slope above Gevrey-Chambertin, in ideal south-easterly exposure between 270 and 300 metres altitude. The soils of limestone and marl impart to the Pinot Noir that mineral tension and freshness which distinguishes it from lower-lying sites. This privileged position combines the power of Gevrey-Chambertin with an almost Chambolle-like finesse and aromatic delicacy. Bruno Clair’s parcel benefits from old vines and a stewardship that respectfully brings the terroir to expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir reveals here its Burgundian soul: complex, multi-layered, never loud. Bruno Clair works with natural fermentation, moderate oak use and minimal intervention. The result is wines of aromatic purity – red fruits, spices, earthy notes – supported by a structure designed for longevity. The 2022 vintage brings, despite heat and drought, thanks to careful hand-harvesting and selective picking, the necessary balance between concentration and freshness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Premier Cru demands a cuisine that honours its complexity: game birds, pigeon or duck in dark sauce, Coq au Vin, Bœuf Bourguignon, aged Comté or Époisses. It also shows its full class with mushroom dishes and truffle.
