Wine Description for IDIG Königsbach Spätburgunder GG VDP Grosse Lage 2020 1500ml Magnum by Christmann
- Colour & Appearance
- Muted garnet red with a luminous violet core – a visual hint at the youthfulness and freshness of this 2020.
- Nose
- Impressive complexity and mineral depth characterise the bouquet. Sour cherries and blackcurrant meld with wild raspberries, underpinned by a distinctive chalky minerality. These are joined by smoky and herbal notes, lending the wine a multifaceted aromatics – typical of the extraordinary Idig vineyard site.
- Palate
- The wine unfolds with remarkable presence: rich, dark fruit meets refreshing sour cherry and an invigorating acidity structure. The fine-grained tannins display finesse and elegance without being intrusive. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains light-footed and inviting – a Spätburgunder with feminine grace and captivating charm.
- Finish
- Persistent and mineral with lingering cherry notes and a delicate herbal spice. The acidity provides freshness and length.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Königsbacher Idig ranks among the most outstanding vineyard sites in the Palatinate. This 4-hectare, near-monopoly prime parcel was in the possession of the Palatinate Electors for over 400 years. The steep south-southeast exposure, sheltered by gentle winds from the Klausental valley, and the terra fusca soil on a substantial limestone bedrock create ideal conditions for mineral-driven top-quality wines.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Noir from old vines and French clones from the upper vineyard section. Hand-harvested at low yields (25-30 hl/ha), 30-50% whole-bunch fermentation for fine tannin structure. Following a 5-day cold maceration, two weeks of skin contact fermentation ensues. Maturation for 18 months in barrique (10% new oak), followed by further ageing in stainless steel.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Roasted duck, venison loin with lingonberries, Coq au Vin, grilled lamb rack or also mushroom risotto with truffle. The elegant structure harmonises beautifully with mature Comté or Époisses.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500ml) promises optimal ageing conditions and slowed development. A wine with considerable ageing potential of 10-15 years. Christmann’s Idig Spätburgunder is considered the benchmark for German Pinot Noir on limestone soil.
