Alfredo Arribas at work in the vineyards of Priorat

As an architect, he designed bars and hotels in Barcelona. Today, Alfredo Arribas crafts wines with Portal del Priorat that reveal the elegant side of Priorat. Centenary Grenache on its own roots, anchored in black Llicorella slate. Yields of one kilogram per vine. What ends up in the bottle tastes of wet stone and wild herbs, not of alcohol and new wood.

Alfredo Arribas spent the summers of his childhood with his grandfather in the Ribera del Duero. The old man was a winegrower, and while other children played on the beach, Alfredo learned how to pick grapes. Decades later, after a successful career as an architect in Barcelona, the memory came back. In 2001 he bought land in the south of the Priorat, near the villages of El Lloar and Bellmunt. He bottled his first wines in 2004.

More about Portal del Priorat

From Drawing Board to Vineyard

Alfredo Arribas spent the summers of his childhood with his grandfather in the Ribera del Duero. The old man was a winegrower, and while other children played on the beach, Alfredo learned how to pick grapes. Decades later, after a successful career as an architect in Barcelona, the memory came back. In 2001 he bought land in the south of the Priorat, near the villages of El Lloar and Bellmunt. He bottled his first wines in 2004.

What Alfredo found were terraces lying fallow, planted with very old vines – Grenache and Cariñena, some more than a hundred years old and on their own roots. Phylloxera had spared them because the Llicorella slate was too barren and too steep. Where others saw hopeless conditions, the architect saw an opportunity.

One Kilogram per Vine

The Clos del Portal estate covers a little over fifty hectares, stretching from the valley of the Siurana river towards the Montsant mountains. About half of it is planted with vines; the rest is olive trees, almond trees and Mediterranean woodland. Alfredo farms organically, without certification, and is moving towards biodynamics; he limits yields radically, to around one kilogram of grapes per vine. That is a fraction of what is considered normal elsewhere.

In the cellar, cellar master Joan Asens continues in the same vein, with spontaneous fermentation using wild yeasts, short macerations, minimal sulphur and no new barriques. The Gotes del Priorat shows this philosophy most directly: an entry-level wine with aromas of violets, garrigue and wet slate. The Negre de Negres has more depth but stays light on its feet. Both drink with an ease that is rare in the Priorat.

Massive Flavour, Moderate Alcohol

“Massive in terms of flavor, diminutive in terms of alcohol” – that is how connoisseurs describe his style. While many Priorat producers seek concentration through overripeness, Alfredo picks earlier. The Grenache keeps its freshness, and the slate leaves a stronger mark on the wine than the wood. This sets Portal del Priorat apart from its neighbours and puts it in the company of producers such as Terroir al Límit, who likewise favour elegance over power.

His masterpiece is Somni, Catalan for “dream”, a blend of Cariñena and Syrah that unites strength and finesse: Mediterranean spice, dark fruit, cooling minerality. Anyone who wants to understand what the Priorat can do beyond the over-extracted blockbusters will find an answer here.

Three Projects, One Approach

Alongside Portal del Priorat, Alfredo runs two other projects. Vins Nus is his natural wine line from the north of the region, wines made with almost no sulphur, no extraction and no new wood. Vins Nus also includes SiurAlta, from high-altitude sites above 700 metres in the Montsant, where cooler nights make even more delicate wines possible. With Trossos, he is also rescuing old vines in the Montsant. All three projects bear the signature of the former architect: clean lines, no superfluous material, room for the essential.
