Tasting note
- Colour & Appearance
- A dense deep violet with a lighter rim and fine, crimson reflections in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose reveals a wild, fascinating tension of sweet and tart nuances. Ripe sweet cherry, mulberry and wild raspberry meet a distinctive spice of cinnamon, clove and black pepper. This interplay is underpinned by savoury umami notes such as black olive, gravy and lovage, rounded off by dried rosemary, sage and oregano.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine presents itself as compact, fleshy and pleasantly taut. The fruit steps back in favour of a savoury, spicy structure. Aromas of black olive, ethereal herbs and nuances reminiscent of juicy meat prepared over an open fire dominate the mouthfeel. A fine, tart note of green walnut provides additional grip.
- Finish
- The finish is long-lasting and carried by a subtle, balsamic freshness as well as the typical, cool notes of the slate soil.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes thrive on the steep slopes and terraces of Mas del Portal in the Priorat, situated at 320 to 360 metres above sea level. The vines, whose age varies between 20 and 75 years, root deeply into the barren, black Llicorella slate, which lends the wines their unmistakable coolness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- This blend is based on Cariñena (Carignan) and Syrah. Following a 22- to 24-day fermentation in conical steel tanks, the wine matures for 15 months in foudres and large casks made of French oak. No new wood is used in order to preserve the freshness.
- Food Pairings
- Excellent with braised shank of lamb with a herb crust, hearty game dishes or an aromatic wild mushroom stir-fry with fresh herbs.
- Special Features
- The Somni impressively demonstrates the philosophy of Alfredo Arribas: elegance instead of heavy power. Despite its concentration, the wine remains lively and slender thanks to an earlier harvest, with a moderate alcohol content of 14% abv – an alternative approach to the over-concentrated blockbusters of the region.
