When Domaine de la Romanée-Conti entrusts a winemaker with the care of its precious vines in the legendary Le Montrachet Grand Cru, it sends an unequivocal message. Domaine Thomas Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet enjoys this rare honour – a true testament to the exceptional vineyard expertise of this tenth-generation winemaker. Since establishing his own estate in 2007, Thomas, together with his wife Sylvie, has been farming 13 hectares across seven villages of the Côte de Beaune, including six Premier Crus in Chassagne-Montrachet and the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet, with vines that are 70 years old. His organically certified, elegantly precise Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are crafted with minimal sulphur and deliberately restrained use of wood – a modern interpretation of Burgundian terroir.

More about Thomas Morey
When the DRC comes knocking
There are moments in a winegrower's life that change everything. For Thomas Morey it was the call from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti asking him to tend their vines in Le Montrachet Grand Cru. Such a request is more than a commission: it is the highest recognition of decades of precision work in the vineyard. Thomas, the 10th generation of a family rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643, had earned this reputation through meticulous work on his own 57 parcels. Since dividing the inheritance with his brother Vincent in 2007 and founding his own domaine with his wife Sylvie, Thomas has shown that he is far more than the son of the legendary Bernard Morey.

Elegance rather than opulence: a new Morey style
Thomas has deliberately moved away from the fuller, more oak-driven style of his famous father. Inspired by figures such as Jean-Marc Roulot, he makes "racy, fine-boned" wines with surgical precision. His Chardonnay cuvées, such as the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru blanc Clos Saint-Jean from the limestone-rich soil of one of the village's largest Premier Cru sites, with white peach, hazelnut and a salty, mineral finish, mature for 16–18 months in 228- and 350-litre barrels with only 20% new oak. Little or no bâtonnage lets the character of the terroir shine through unaltered. For his reds, such as the Beaune 1er Cru Beaune-Grèves, Thomas dispenses entirely with fining and filtration, a trust in nature that has to be earned.

Organic pioneer with a minimalist philosophy
Thomas began converting to organic farming as early as 2011 and has been officially certified organic since 2017. No sulphur during fermentation, exclusively spontaneous fermentation and at most 35 mg/l of sulphur in the finished wine: these parameters reveal a grower who gives the terroir maximum room. The philosophy is shown to particularly impressive effect in the Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Le Puits, where Thomas proves that the lesser-known appellations of the Côte de Beaune are also capable of exceptional elegance. Much like A. et P. de Villaine in Bouzeron, Thomas embodies a new generation of Burgundian growers who combine tradition with modern ecological awareness. His crown jewel, however, remains the Bâtard-Montrachet from 70-year-old vines, a wine that conveys all the finesse and complexity of Burgundian terroir in its purest form.
