Wine Description for Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2019 1500ml Magnum by Château de Pibarnon

Colour & Appearance
A deep, opaque violet-tinged ruby red, showing no weakness right to the rim – the colour alone promises substance and seriousness.
Nose
Inviting and multi-layered: blackberries, cassis and elderberry form the fruity core, complemented by the typical Mourvèdre signature of leather, tree bark and cocoa. Mediterranean herbs join in – rosemary, thyme, juniper – along with a hint of liquorice. A wine that practically breathes the garrigue-swept landscape of Provence.
Palate
Charming yet powerful: sweet cassis notes meet present, well-integrated tannins and a vibrant, structure-giving acidity. The Mourvèdre shows its animal, primal side – wild, earthy, authentic. A wine with real backbone, rewarding patience.
Finish
Long, spicy and of remarkable persistence. The herbal spice and dark fruit linger, carried by silky tannins that still signal development potential.
Terroir & Origin
The vines stand in a natural amphitheatre at 250 metres altitude, facing the sea, on an extraordinary soil of clay, limestone and Triassic chalk. This geological peculiarity gives Pibarnon its distinctive minerality and freshness – rare in Bandol.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache, exclusively from the estate’s oldest vines. After around three weeks of fermentation, the wine matures for 20 months in carefully selected barriques, tonneaux and large wooden vessels – vinified with parcel precision. A classic Vin de Garde, deserving of time.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with wild rabbit with porcini risotto and thyme, equally convincing with pigeon with lemon-nougat hollandaise and crispy beetroot chips. For vegetarian preferences: a crêpe with Bleu d’Auvergne and blackberries captures the character of this wine with remarkable precision.
Special Features
The magnum bottle (1.5 l) is simply the ideal format for a Vin de Garde like this – slower maturation, greater depth. Those opening now should decant. Those who wait will be rewarded: cellaring potential until at least 2035.
