Wine Description for Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2011 by Château de Pibarnon

Character
Château de Pibarnon ranks among the outstanding estates of the Bandol appellation and stands for uncompromising quality in Provence. The Rouge 2011 represents a classic Bandol with its Mourvèdre-dominated blend, complemented by Cinsault. After more than a decade of bottle age, this wine demonstrates the remarkable ageing potential and development that Mourvèdre from this extraordinary terroir brings – a rarity in a region often known for light rosés.
Terroir & Origin
The steep, terraced vineyards of Pibarnon perch at altitudes up to 300 metres above the Mediterranean and rank among the most spectacular vineyard sites in Provence. The chalky soils combined with the maritime breeze create ideal conditions for late-ripening varieties such as Mourvèdre. The amphitheatre-like valley protects the vines and enables slow, even ripening – crucial for the structure and complexity that distinguish this estate.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Mourvèdre is the soul of Bandol and demands patience – both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The variety brings dense tannins, dark fruit and spicy notes that only harmonise with time. The Cinsault component lends the blend elegance and freshness. At Pibarnon, traditional methods prevail: lengthy maceration periods and ageing in large wooden casks define a style that prioritises authenticity over accessibility. The 2011 vintage enjoyed ideal conditions in Provence with warm, dry weather.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This mature Bandol calls for hearty, Mediterranean cuisine: lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs, braised wild boar stew or grilled beef. It also shines with ratatouille, aubergine gratin or aged hard cheese such as Comté. The developed tertiary aromas harmonise beautifully with mushroom dishes and truffles.
