Wine description for Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2011 by Château de Pibarnon

Character
Château de Pibarnon ranks among the authentic ambassadors of the Bandol appellation and demonstrates with this Rouge how Mourvèdre-dominated wines from Provence can age. The 2011 vintage presents itself after more than a decade with that Mediterranean depth and structural complexity that characterises this appellation. The addition of Cinsault lends the wine an extra aromatic finesse and elegance, without diluting its powerful core structure.
Terroir & Origin
Pibarnon sits on the terraced south-facing slopes above Bandol, where the vines thrive on chalky soils at altitudes up to 300 metres. This exposed location with direct Mediterranean influence and cooling winds creates ideal conditions for the late-ripening Mourvèdre grape. The terroir gives these wines their characteristic mineral tension and freshness, which even at 14% alcohol provides balance. The Provence region here is far removed from Rosé clichés – Pibarnon stands for serious, age-worthy red wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Mourvèdre, the backbone of this wine, is a demanding variety that requires warmth and time. It brings dense tannins, dark fruit and a characteristic earthy spice. Cinsault adds red berry notes and suppleness. The Château works traditionally with extended maceration and ageing in large wooden barrels, which gives the wines their typical structure without overwhelming them with oak. The 2011 vintage benefited from good conditions in Provence with sufficient ripeness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This mature Bandol calls for robust Provençal dishes: Daube de Bœuf, braised lamb with herbs, game or a rustic beef stew. It also harmonises beautifully with grilled meat, duck breast or pungent hard cheeses. The wine’s Mediterranean spice finds resonance with olive tapenade, thyme and rosemary.
