Wine Description for Lirac “La Lorentine” AOC 2021 by Marcoux
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense purple with delicate violet reflections – a wine that reveals its youth and concentration immediately in the glass.
- Nose
- Impressively profound and complex. The nose begins with a wave of dark berry fruit: blackcurrant, morello cherry and blackberry dominate, flanked by sweet cherry and rosehip. Dark floral aromas of hibiscus, pansy and lilac lend an elegant, almost perfumed dimension. With air contact, a Mediterranean spice palette develops: black pepper, juniper, rosemary and black olive. Dried fruits such as raisin and date provide depth, whilst cedarwood, tobacco leaves and dark chocolate bring additional complexity.
- Palate
- Surprisingly elegant despite its fullness. The wine flows smoothly whilst displaying remarkable structure. A fine, distinctive tannin framework carries the concentrated fruit and floral notes effortlessly. The crucial acidity structure prevents any heaviness and lends the wine freshness and length. The Mediterranean spice intensifies as it develops, whilst roasted almonds in the finish add an additional textural dimension.
- Finish
- Long and spicy with lingering notes of tobacco, roasted almonds and dark fruit. The spice elements pleasantly dominate the aftertaste.
- Terroir & Origin
- The 7-hectare vineyard sites lie on the western slopes of the Rhône in Saint Laurent des Arbres, in the heart of the Lirac appellation. The soils of limestone with red clay, interspersed with gravel, pebbles and sand, shape the characterful expression of this wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Classic cuvée of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Following careful selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table, the grapes are completely destemmed and cold macerated before fermentation. Temperature-controlled fermentation with daily pump-overs, followed by 19 months ageing in cement tanks and large wooden vats.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with braised lamb shoulder with rosemary potatoes, grilled wild broccoli with nduja and celeriac purée or Mediterranean roasted vegetables with braised blackberries. The spice and structure harmonise beautifully with robust meat dishes and aromatic vegetables.
- Special Features
- A Lirac that proves the southern Rhône has far more to offer than Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Domaine de Marcoux combines concentration with elegance here – a wine with considerable ageing potential.
