Sangiovese
Sangiovese is the beating heart of central Italy, a grape variety that breathes vibrant life into the lean limestone and clay soils of Tuscany. Its character is defined by a pronounced acid structure and a fine-grained tannin framework, evoking aromas of sour cherries, dried herbs and a subtle earthiness. It possesses the remarkable ability to combine density with an almost ethereal freshness. Just how profound and age-worthy this variety can be when vinified on its own is demonstrated by the estate Le Chiuse in Montalcino, whose wines are underpinned by precise structure and inner calm. In Montalcino, the variety is exclusively vinified as a single varietal: the long-aged Brunello di Montalcino reveals its depth, while the earlier-released Rosso di Montalcino showcases its juicy side.
That Sangiovese also has a carefree, succulent side is proven by the rosés of Tenuta di Carleone. As a blending partner, it proves wonderfully adaptable: at Corzano e Paterno, it harmonises beautifully with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. At the table, it calls for honest cuisine, from bistecca to aged Pecorino.
